Inspection Programmes: HMI Probation
Thematic Inspections
On thematic work carried out by HMI Probation as a single inspectorate, the Effective Supervision Inspection programme (completed in April 2006) contained a thematic element (see also separate page). Thematic reports published under the ESI were:
-
employment and basic skills (February 2004)
-
domestic violence (July 2004)
-
racially motivated offenders (February 2005)
-
offender accommodation (July 2005)
-
unpaid work/ enhanced community punishment (May 2006)
-
substance misuse (July 2006)
We also published a short focused inspection on the implementation of OASys (the offender assessment system used in the NPS) in December 2005.
Increasingly our thematic work is carried out jointly with other inspectorates. We led a joint inspection on the management of sex offenders the report of which was published in December 2005. We have similarly led a wider joint inspection of public protection, the report of which has been published in September 2006.
Also over the last 12 months or so we published a report on the role of YOTs in the safeguarding of children, in the context of the second joint inspectorate review of children’s safeguards in which we participated.
We carried out a joint inspection with HM Inspectorate of Court Administration into the
arrangements for starting Community Orders. The report was published in September 2007.
We also participate with other criminal justice inspectorates in the joint inspection of criminal justice areas (see separate page).
Plans for joint thematic inspections in 2008/09 are set out in the Criminal Justice Inspectorates’ Joint Inspection Business Plan 2008/09 here
