Diversity
HMI Probation is committed to the active promotion of diversity issues.
Diversity
One of the stated purposes of HM Inspectorate of Probation is to promote actively race equality and wider diversity issues, especially in the organisations we inspect but also within our own employment and organisational processes. Our overarching objective is to work towards removing improper discrimination in the criminal justice system and we make our contribution in the role of a statutory independent Inspectorate. Ensuring that the diverse needs of adult offenders and children and young people who have committed offences are properly assessed and addressed makes a significant contribution to the work of Probation Areas and Youth Offending Teams to prevent re-offending.
Race, Disability and Gender Equality Scheme 2007-2010
Whilst still within the Home Office the Inspectorate compiled this Single Equalities Scheme which addresses the general and specific duties under legislation in relation to Race, Disability and Gender. This document is available to download here.
Welsh Language Scheme
In order to fulfill its statutory obligations HM Inspectorate of Inspection has prepared a Welsh Language Scheme setting out how we propose to deliver services in Welsh. This was approved by the Welsh Language Board on 8 June 2007. A copy may be downloaded here in Welsh and English.
Diversity Action Plan 2007 - 2008
This plan sets out the work to be led by the Diversity Working Group, a cross – grade group of staff meeting bi-monthly. It addresses the actions required under the Single Equalities Scheme and Welsh Language Scheme but also wider aspects of diversity. This document is available to download here.
We inspect probation work in each criminal justice Area every three years and the work of YOTs in a five year cycle. Reports with recommendations for improvement are published approximately three months after the fieldwork is completed. The format of reports develops over time. Currently the Offender Management Inspection is the general inspection programme and each report contains sections addressing attention to diversity. These sections will be compiled into a regional report and published here as inspections in each region are completed. YOTI reports now contain a section at the beginning of the document which summarises diversity issues relating to each team.
