Performance Review Inspection: Cumbria - Jan 1999
The annual Inspection of Cumbria Constabulary was conducted between 18 and 22 January1999, by Her Majesty�s Inspector of Constabulary, Mr Dan Crompton CBE, QPM, CI Mgt.2. The Inspection took place against a backdrop of considerable change at all levels of theorganisation. Budgetary pressures have forced the Police Authority and chief officer team to make somedifficult decisions. However, this has been positively approached to enable the Force to reflect upon whatthe core services are that it provides to the public, how these services are to be provided and in whatstyle. Structural reorganisation has been introduced which will widen managerial spans of responsibility ata time when the Force are keen to devolve more decision-making to local accountable levels. The Forcehave launched a commitment to a policing philosophy based upon intelligence led policing to ensure thatefforts are targeted with the utmost efficiency and effectiveness. Whilst commendable it is essential thatthe Force supports these developments with the appropriate levels of resources, technology and training.
