Performance Review Inspection: Cumbria - October 1995
This is a police force hallmarked by its traditional approach to current problems, employing a stylewhich is well suited to the demands of the general public and to the widespread and often rural nature ofthe county. The Force enjoys a good relationship with the public it serves and both police and publicalike share a justified pride in the results that are achieved.Budgetary constraints caused the Chief Constable and the Police Authority to reappraise their approachand to reduce the numbers of police officers available for duty -most of those in staff positions. It is thestated intention of the Chief Constable (and fully supported by the Authority) to maintain frontline policecover, if at all possible. This year, they have been successful in that aim.
