Performance Review Inspection: Cambridgeshire - Feb 1996

An organisational review, begun in 1993, and nearing completion, has established three territorialdivisions (Basic Command Units) divided into 14 sectors as the basis for localised service delivery.Management on-costs have been driven down to a creditable 38.5% with potential for furthersavings. Recent favourable financial settlements and prudent management have enabled significantbalances to be generated, together with additional pension and insurance provisions. The recruitmentof 36 extra police officers in 1994/5, with 51 more budgeted for in 1996/7, will be of great benefit inimproving visible police cover, whilst the appointment of 63 new growth civilian posts has enabledmajor advances in key support areas such as human resources and IT, as well as in planning. In viewof the healthy financial state of the Force, scope to accelerate staff recruiting and implementation ofmajor IT projects should be explored.
