    The Inspection of the Newport Basic Command Unit (BCU), referred to as 'A' Division,was carried out on behalf of Her Majesty�s Inspectorate of Constabulary by ChiefSuperintendent Cecil Craig, assisted by Chief Inspector Alan Dewberry, between 15 and19 July 2002.

    The Gwent Police Force covers an area of 600 square miles with a population in excess of550,000 in an estimated 235,000 dwellings. The Gwent policing area is mixed, rural andurban, and the road network carries large volumes of traffic through the M4 link to the east,which now incorporates the second Severn crossing. Gwent divisional boundaries matchone or more of the five unitary authorities within the force area: Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly,Newport, Torfaen and Monmouthshire.

    Gwent Police covers an area of 600 square miles with a population in excess of 550,000 in an estimated 235,000 dwellings. This mixed urban and rural area is bounded byAbergavenny in the north, Newport in the south, Chepstow in the east and Caerphilly inthe west, and its road network carries large volumes of traffic through its M4 link to thesecond Severn crossing. The four territorial basic command units (BCUs) boundariesmatch those of the five unitary authorities within the force area: Blaenau Gwent,Caerphilly, Newport, Torfaen and Monmouthshire; a chief superintendent(superintendent in Blaenau Gwent) is the divisional commander and is responsible forthe overall policing and management of the area. D division provides operationalsupport to the BCUs.
