    The county of Derbyshire is set in the heart of England and covers a mixture of both urban and rural areas ranging from the industrialised city of Derby in the south to the vast moorlands and countryside of the Peak District in the north. The county covers an area of over 1000 square miles, with a total population of 956, 293 in 401,273 households. Derbyshire has a wealth of attractions, both natural and man-made, which makes the area a popular destination for tourists.

    The inspection of Buxton Basic Command Unit (BCU), referred to as B Division, Derbyshire Constabulary was carried out on behalf of Her Majestys Inspectorate ofConstabulary by a Staff Officer for BCU Inspections Mr. Stephen Griffiths, assistedby Chief Inspector Christopher Ward between 28 June and 2 July 2004.

    The Inspection of the Derby (D Division) Basic Command Unit (BCU) was carried outon behalf of Her Majesty�s Inspectorate of Constabulary by Chief Superintendent RobertEvans, assisted by Chief Inspector Paul Longden, between 27 November and 1December 2001. (Note: Whilst corporately and locally the Derby BCU is referred to as�D Division�, the national BCU family grouping refers to it as Derby BCU. Thisdefinition has therefore been adhered to throughout this Report, although it is realisedthat the BCU covers an area larger than Derby alone.)

    The Inspection of the Alfreton (A Division) Basic Command Unit (BCU) was carriedout on behalf of Her Majestys Inspectorate of Constabulary by Chief Superintendent Robert Evans, assisted by Chief Inspectors Alan Dewberry and Paul Longdon, between19 and 23 November 2001. (Note: Whilst corporately and locally the Alfreton BCU isreferred to as A Division, the national BCU family grouping refers to it as Alfreton BCU. This definition has been adhered to throughout this Report, although it is realised that the BCU headquarters is at Ripley and the BCU covers an area larger than Alfreton.)
