Inspection Protocol for Vehicle Fleet Management

Transport is a major consumer of resources with an estimated 25,000 vehicles in use in the 43Police Forces in England and Wales in the year ending March 1999. These vehicles cover anannual combined distance of over a billion miles and accrue costs estimated at �185m inrunning costs, including �35m in fuel and �40m in spare parts, and a further �57m in newvehicle purchase costs.The Audit Commission paper � Improving Vehicle Fleet Management In The Police Servicerecommended that the responsibility for fleet management should be delegated to a fullycivilianised transport section that has professional expertise and acts as an internal �contractor�to the force.
