Inspection Protocol for Occupational Health and Welfare

In common with many public and private sector organisations, the growingcomplexity of health and safety regulations has persuaded most forces to reducetheir exclusive use of non-specialist doctors. Instead they are increasinglyemploying professionally qualified occupational health staff. These includephysicians and nurses with the skills and competencies necessary to ensure ahealthy and efficient workforce able to perform to its fullest ability within a safeand healthy workplace. The medical practitioners will be associates or membersof the Faculty of Occupational Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians. Thenurses will be Registered Nurses with a specialist qualification in occupationalhealth such as an occupational health nursing diploma. In practical termsoccupational health units have frequently taken over and extended medical issuesin which the traditional welfare departments have previously played a major role.
