Not all forces with a coastline have their own dedicated marine section. Some forces havedisbanded them to fund other areas of police activity such as air support.Marine sections are expensive and very specialist areas of police work. It is often difficult tomake a clear link between the work of the marine section and objectives within policing plans �links are often tenuous. They may be expressed as �crime prevention�, �community policing� or�high visibility�. Assessing the true value or benefit of a marine section is difficult but this doesnot necessarily mean they are not providing best value. The high value of marine property alongour coastline should not be underestimated.
