Inspection Protocol for Major Investigation

Although many public services are increasingly challenged by competition from other providersconducting major investigations it has always been seen as a key specialist skill offered bypolice forces which is not readily available elsewhere. The successful handling of suchinvestigations therefore makes a significant contribution to public confidence in the policeservice. That confidence has been undermined in recent years following a number of high profilecases, the latest and most significant of which was the murder of Stephen Lawrence which ledto a public enquiry. The report of that enquiry recommended that HMIC examine majorinvestigations conducted by the Metropolitan Police to reassure the public that all the necessarylessons could be learned and the necessary improvements made.
