Inspection Protocol for Firearms
The British police service does not routinely carry firearms for general patrol purposes. However,it has always been necessary for firearms to be available to the police to deal withcircumstances where members of the public or police officers would be placed at risk if suchweapons were not to hand.The use of firearms by the police developed in an incremental fashion, as different ChiefConstables made assessments of the needs of their various police force areas. An element ofstandardisation was developed by chief officers through the Association of Police Officers (ACPO).
